Diet for Leonbergers

Proper diet and care is an essential part of producing wonderful Leonbergers. The requirements for your individual Leonberger puppy, adolescent, adult, or senior may vary and you should always consult with your veterinarian and breeder.

The Proper Diet Debate

The best diet for Leonbergers can be the subject of long, onerous debates. However, everyone agrees that our very large breed requires premium nutrition for proper growth and the maintenance of good health. Leonbergers throughout the world have been kept in top condition on commercially prepared dog foods and dog foods prepared in the home.

Diet for Puppies

Leonberger puppies should not be fed food that is very high in protein and encourages rapid growth. The bones of Leonberger puppies are genetically programmed to grow at a certain rate and providing too much protein – a common problem with “puppy” foods – can lead to unwanted problems.

Our Personal Practices

We feed our Leonbergers a premium commercially prepared dog food. The Evo Ancestral formula we feed is based on ground chicken and turkey meat, bones, fat, cartilage and connective tissue. The diet includes whole, raw fruits and vegetables which contain health promoting phytochemicals and micronutrients. We believe a diet with limited grain intake may help prevent, delay, and/or slow certain cancers and thus encourage greater longevity in our Leonbergers. Learn more about their line of products here.
