Sforzando Starts Off July With a Bang!
July 1st marked the entry of the
Leonberger into the AKC working group and our Sforzando Leonbergers did
a great job in Bel Alton, MD; West Friendship, MD; and Berryville, VA
shows. Brubeck, in particular, has earned some big wins with multiple
Winners Bitch placements, multiple Best of Breeds, and a prestigious
Bred By Exhibitor Group 1 placement at the Shawnee Kennel Club show.
Her judge, unfortunately, had a heat stroke and was not available for a
picture. Susan is pictured on the left with her conformation mentor,
Dale. Those sort of wins would be a lot tougher without his help!

Best of Breed and Best of Opposite In Hampton, VA
We were very excited to be able
to show under Mrs. Paula Hartinger at the Gloucester Kennel Club's show
in Hampton, VA. She was a great judge and we were lucky to have the
opportunity so close to home. Brubeck took Best of Breed and Copeland
took Best of Opposite. Brubeck really shined in the ring and Copeland,
though he is in his awkward "tween" stage, did just fine. Way to go,
guys!

ILPN A Disease of the Past?
Though
we couldn't attend the Leonberger National Specialty in Sacramento,
California this year, the news reached us quickly. Researchers believe
they have found the genetic marker for early onset Inherited Leonberger
Poly- neuropathy (ILPN). This early onset form of the disease cripples
a Leonberger's movement and partially paralyzes the larynx. Leos with
the disease can not move, bark, or exercise like a normal Leonberger.
Thanks to the Leonberger Health Foundation, a test may be developed within the year to help eliminate this disease from the breed. Good riddance!

Sforzando Represents Well at Raleigh, NC AKC Cluster
Raleigh is just down the road from us and we had a fabulous opportunity to show under Mr. Yamuda and Mr. Bassett that we just couldn't pass up! Copeland took BOB on Saturday and Brubeck kept him from having a two win streak on Sunday. Mr. Yamuda, in particular, has a great deal of experience and prestige in judging the working group and we were thrilled to get our Leonbergers in the ring with him.

Mid-Atlantic Leonberger Regional Specialty

Rafiki,
Brubeck's father, took Best of Breed at the Mid-Atlantic Leonberger
Specialty. We are very proud of him - not bad for a veteran Leonberger!
Isn't he one of the most striking Leos of all time? We know he has made
some beautiful Leonberger puppies. Agi has every right to be a round
momma. The "B" Litter Leonberger puppies that he fathered will turn two
years on June 12th. Happy birthday, everyone!

Susan Takes Win at George Alston Seminar

Susan took first place with
Brubecks Take 5 di Sforzando at the very well known George Alston
Handling Seminar sponsored by the Moore County Kennel Club. This event
is the exciting culmination of two days of study and practice by about
twenty handlers under the tutelage of one of America's most successful
professional handlers.

Sforzando Represents Well at Greenville, SC AKC Cluster

We
went down to Greenville, SC to help Susan Grosslight do an educational
seminar on the Leonberger for AKC judges. While we were there, Brubeck
and Copeland took turns with Best of Breed against some nice Leos at
the Greenville Shows. Copeland was particularly proud to score a win
against his sister while being handicapped by Matt's handling. Guess he
must be made out of the right stuff, eh?! We were proud of how well
they handled such a large venue and how well they interacted with
everyone they met.

That's "CHAMPION" Brubecks Take Five di Sforzando
Brubecks
Take Five di Sforzando took a big Group First placement at the Raleigh
Kennel Club's Canine Expo and finished her championship in the process
with her fourth big major. She didn't slow down a second,
taking
Best of Breed and another Group First against some big competition the
next day at the Fredericksburg show in Virginia. Copeland, at just
seven months of age, to Best of Opposite and was put up over some
beautiful and successful competition. Pic
